In honor of the upcoming Great American Family movie, Christmas at the Drive-In, Maria Provenzano is whipping up a drive-in staple, sundaes.

Vanilla ice cream

Candy canes

Chocolate Sauce



1. Crush up the candy canes into small pieces.

2. Mix the candy cane pieces into the vanilla ice cream, and place it back into the freezer for at least an hour.

3. Scoop the ice cream into a tall bowl and layer with chocolate sauce and more crushed-up candy cane pieces.

4. Top with candy cane pieces.


Homemade, Fudgy Brown Sugar Chocolate Sauce


1 cup whole milk

1/3 cup cocoa powder (I like Dutch Process)

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

1 tablespoon espresso (or coffee)

cinnamon stick (optional)

pinch of salt

1 teaspoon vanilla



1. In a bowl, combine the sugar, cocoa, and salt.

2. Whisk to combine.

3. Pour milk in a saucepan.

4. Add sugar mixture to the milk and whisk together.

5. Continue to whisk mixture over medium heat; add in the chocolate chips.

6. Add in the cinnamon stick.

7. Continue to whisk and bring the mixture to just under a boil.

8. Simmer for about 5-8 until everything is incorporated.

9. Remove from heat and whisk in the coffee and vanilla.

10. Use immediately or let cool completely and store in a sealed container and refrigerate.
